    The Makings of an Icon

Steve McCurry is an American photographer who was made famous for his portrait called “The Afghan Girl”, which was taken in a refugee camp near Peshawar, Pakistan, and was featured on the cover of National Geographic in 1985. In his new book, Steve McCurry: On Reading, a personal collection of photographs taken over his forty years of travel, McCurry pays tribute to the act of reading. In homage to legendary photographer André Kertész’s own volume On Reading, published in 1971, McCurry’s images portray the absorbing power of the written word. On Reading is introduced by an expansive essay by award-winning writer Paul Theroux, on the act of reading, and the comforts of literacy. Steve McCurry: On Reading is published by Phaidon, and was released on October 3, 2016.
