Wildlife Category September 2020 Winner, taken in Bandar Botanic, Klang, Selangor, Malaysia, captioned “Blowing Bubbles“.

As ASIAN Geographic’s annual Images of Asia (IOA) 2020 Photo/Videography Competition looms closer, submissions to our IOA Monthly competition – the precursor to our annual event – are pouring in. We have received stunning photos across the categories, and are now featuring our monthly winners in an exclusive interview!

Below is our interview with one of this month’s spotlight, Lee Shing Yaw, the IOA Monthly September 2020 winner in the Wildlife category.

AG: What is the story of your beginning and journey to creating great images?

Shing Yaw: I picked up my first DSLR in 2008 and after 3 years, I started to join photography contests and has won several accolades in the local and international photography scenes. By joining the photography contests, I will be able to gauge my skills in photography and learn from others’ winning photos.

I always attempt to portray a “WOW” element on my images and will visualize of an image before I press the shutter.

AG: How would you define your style and concepts you enjoy exploring?

Shing Yaw: I do not have any specific style and concepts but I will always try to get the best photos in any photography genres. However, I do enjoy macro photography as we get to see all the details in the macro world that can’t be seen with the naked eye.

AG: What is great photography to you, and are there any photographers you would like to work with?

Shing Yaw: Great photography is where a photo speaks for itself and the viewers will be able to connect and immerse themselves into it. There are many great photographers around be it locally or internationally and I especially admire the works of Vineet Vohra in street photography.

AG: What is your preferred imaging gear to work with and why?

Shing Yaw: I have been with Nikon gears since the beginning and satisfied with its image’s quality. Moreover, the buttons on its DSLR body and its functionality are user-friendly.

AG: What is the next Asian destination you’d like to explore and why?

Shing Yaw: Definitely, China, as it is a very vast country and has many beautiful landscapes and cultures to be explored which provides many photos opportunities.

AG: Can you share more about your current and upcoming projects?
Shing Yaw: I do not have any current or upcoming projects at the moment as many countries are facing travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, I do venture out locally to capture a series of birds that are available in Malaysia and it is a new challenge to me as it requires a lot of patience and perfect timing.
